About last fall, I started playing table tennis again for the first time in nearly 50 years. There are several table tennis clubs in Bergen County, but I decided to join TAK 9 Club in Palisades Park. As I approach the age of 70, returning to table tennis came with several concerns. First, safety was very important to me. The condition of the flooring and proper air circulation in the club mattered a great deal. Second, because table tennis is not a sport you can truly enjoy alone, I felt that a welcoming and considerate atmosphere toward new members was essential. Third was the availability of tables, since being able to practice regularly makes a big difference. After visiting several clubs, I felt that TAK 9 fulfilled all three of these conditions. I had saved it on Google Maps long ago, and this fall, I finally had the chance to visit during my stay in Manhattan. The facility is located on the ground floor of a warehouse-style building. It's spacious, clean, and very well-ventilated. There are plenty of tables, and the high ceiling makes it ideal even for lob-style players. You can feel the ownerβs attention to detail in the lighting and layout β it's clearly a place designed by someone who cares deeply about the sport. What impressed me most is that this is arguably the hottest table tennis club on the East Coast. Players across a wide range of USATT ratings β from hobbyists to semi-professionals β gather here to play.
